Panoramic view of Boñar

Porma´s Dam

Boñar is located in a privileged place. The waste National Reserve of Mampodre, with an area of 29, 238 hectares in which live species of the big game as bears, wild boars, chamois, roe deers and deers; and the Bog of Porma, 47 kms far from León, Boñar is the unquestionable starting point for many routes and excursions..

According to several books, the first writings known until now belong to the year 924 with the donation of several properties, given by the Earl of Guisuado and his wife Doña Leuvina, to the monastery foundation of San Adrián.

There are another three important dates in the Boñar's history: 1836, when the town council of Boñar is expanded and is founded the new council; 1894, with the arrival of the coal railway from the Robla, due to this fact, the Villa became the shopping and services centre of the region, which means a logical economic growth and, 1898, when the Town Hall was built.

In the coat of arms of the Villa are represented three characteristic elements: water, the tower with clock of Maragato and the Negrillón.

The Porma river goes through the Villa of Boñar from north to south, and its name means hot and bubbling water, which indicates that its waters were used long time ago for therapeutic baths.

Another reference in this sense is the Caldas de San Adrían and the Fountain of the Calda, that means health, which inscription made in the stone corroborates that the fountain was built in the roman age by Alexio Aquilego.

The Marquis of Astorga, landord of parish church of Boñar, contributed to its construction and presented to the Villa with a tower clock (XVIIth century), which was called by the villagers Maragato.

The history of the Negrillón seems to belong to the XVIth century. This tree has been the symbol of the Villa during centuries. It withered a few years ago and it has been petrified.
